Hundreds Sign Petition Urging
Protection of Arbuckle Simpson
September 2002

Folks attending the Chickasaw Festival on Saturday showed that they care about keeping Johnston County water in Johnston County.  As they arrived at the park, 661 people stopped and signed a petition addressed to Oklahoma Elected Officials urging the protection of the Arbuckle-Simpson Aquifer.  The annual Festival was held the first week of October in Tishomingo, the capital of the Chickasaw Nation and the county seat of Johnston County.

The petition was prepared by the local action group, Citizens for the Protection of Johnston County Water.  Volunteers from the group also distributed thousands of leaflets to people watching the parade Saturday morning.

According to the group's volunteers, most of the people they met expressed strong opposition to the large-scale pumping of water from the aquifer and selling it to cities outside the aquifer recharge zone.

THE PETITION

TO: Oklahoma Elected Officials:
I am an Oklahoma resident who is gravely concerned about our water resources.  The plan to commercially pump water from the Arbuckle-Simpson aquifer could cause an economic, environmental, ecological and cultural disaster in several southern Oklahoma counties.  Please use your good offices to ensure that this disaster does not occur.

The petition will be delivered to various elected officials as part of the campaign to protect the aquifer.
